Lassa Fever Outbreak: 535 Cases, 98 Confirm Dead

In light of the fact that the disease is spreading and has already claimed the lives of 98 people in 2025, including a veterinarian.

In the midst of the present outbreak of Lassa fever, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has underlined the growing urgency for Nigerians to keep their environs free of rodents and to improve their personal cleanliness.

The government agency emphasized the need of taking preventative measures, including as properly disposing of waste, putting food in airtight containers, and preventing entry sites for rodents, in light of the fact that the disease is spreading and has already claimed the lives of 98 people in 2025, including a veterinarian.

In light of the alarming case fatality rate of 18.3% as of epidemiological week 9 (February 24 – March 2, 2025), the Director General (DG) of the agency, Jide Idris, stated that the public health advice became urgently required.

According to him, the 98 deaths that occurred over that time period were registered in 14 different states, one of which was a physician who worked in the medical field.

When the data were broken down, the Director General disclosed that as of the time period under consideration, Nigeria had registered a total of 2,728 suspected cases and 535 confirmed cases.

According to him, the states of Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi were responsible for 91% of the confirmed cases, while ten Local Government Areas (LGAs) were responsible for 68% of the total cases being reported.

This report follows after the death of 31-year-old physician who had recently returned from the United Kingdom.

IREPORT247NEW reports that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a physician, who was 31 years old, passed away from Lassa fever disease.

His death occurred several weeks after he returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom.The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said on Sunday, March 9, that the man had gone away on March 1.

“On March 5, 2025, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention was notified of a confirmed case of Lassa fever by the Ondo State Ministry of Health.

“The patient, a 31-year-old physician, was managed at a private health facility in Ondo State after returning from a trip abroad (UK).

“The patient departed Nigeria on 19/02/2025 and returned on 27/02/2025. Samples were taken late on Friday, 28/02/2025, on suspicion of Lassa fever, but the patient unfortunately passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 01/03/2025.

“Laboratory investigation confirmed the result as Lassa fever-positive through PCR testing on Tuesday, 04/03/2025.

“The patient was reported to have visited his fiancée in Edo State, as well as family and friends, before travelling.”
