The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently discovered a shipment of cannabis-infused candies that were intended to be sold in a children’s store in Lagos.

The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this information in a post on X.com on Sunday, accompanied by photographs.

Babafemi disclosed that the candies, which were imported and branded as sweet treats for children, were discovered to contain a potent strain of cannabis, which results in serious concerns regarding the safety of children’s snacks.

Babafemi wrote, “Narco-trends: One of the latest seizures by #ndlea_nigeria officers is candies confirmed to contain a strong strain of cannabis.

“Parents, let’s stay alert to the sweets and snacks our kids take to school or bring home.”

In early February 2025, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State issued a warning to parents about certain candies and sweets that are believed to contain intoxicating substances.

The publicity officer of the agency, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, said that some of these candies look like regular chocolates but are actually suspect.

The kind of sweets that kids eat, especially at school, should be closely monitored by parents, he declared.

It is essential for parents to keep a close eye out for any strange behaviour exhibited by their children, as Maigatari explained that these sweets that contain drugs are being sold to children who are unaware of their existence.

“Parents should be on the lookout if they observe some changes in their children, the changes they should observe include sudden changes in their eating habits and their sleeping patterns,” Maigatari advised.

The NDLEA is making efforts to monitor the distribution of these potentially hazardous candies in order to stop them from reaching a greater number of children.
