Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, stated that the started e-border monitoring system has been effective for border security. This effort, which began on December 14, 2024, in the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex, aims to curb irregular migration and improve border security.
In a statement provided to Sunday PUNCH, the minister noted that the technology has made tremendous development since its deployment. Tunji-Ojo went on to say that one of the most impressive aspects of the e-border system was its ability to detect and apprehend persons of interest.
He also stated that the integration of INTERPOL and other national security databases had considerably improved our ability to detect and respond to threats at our borders.
Within a few weeks of the operation, the minister stated that the system had successfully identified and detained individuals with criminal backgrounds or suspicious activity.
The statement said, “Since its implementation, the e-border monitoring system has been highly effective in combating illicit migration, one of Nigeria’s long-standing border security concerns.
“The project uses cutting-edge automation and monitoring tools to enable real-time surveillance across Nigeria’s extensive 4,447 kilometres of land, air, and sea borders.”
“The Nigeria Immigration Service, which operates the system, has installed innovative e-border solutions at over 80 crossing locations across the country. These systems combine data from INTERPOL and Nigerian security agencies to enable seamless identification and interception of persons of interest.”
