The Oyo State Government has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to draft a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) policy document. This collaborative effort aims to review, finalize, and validate the WASH policy document and its implementation strategies. The partnership also involves WaterAid Nigeria, which has been supporting the state’s WASH initiatives since 1990.
According to Babalola Afobaje, Chairman of the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, this collaboration will enhance WASH services within the state. The policy document is essential for attracting investments from local and international development partners, as it outlines the state’s commitment to improving access to safe water, sanitation, hygiene, and achieving an open defecation-free status.
The validation of the WASH policy marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable development and climate resilience in the state and sub-region. The policy aims to ensure sustainability and effectiveness in creating a healthier environment. The involvement of various stakeholders is crucial to ensure the policy is comprehensive and addresses the unique needs of different communities within the state.
UNICEF has committed to supporting the development of the WASH policy in Oyo State. The organization will develop and document necessary steps to advance the state’s progress in this sector. WaterAid Nigeria has also expressed its commitment to the program, emphasizing the importance of finalizing the policy to move forward.
The validation of the WASH policy is expected to provide a clear framework for implementing WASH initiatives across Oyo State. The policy will serve as a guiding framework to stimulate concrete action to protect the environment and secure the future of the state. With the support of UNICEF and WaterAid Nigeria, Oyo State is taking significant steps towards improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for its citizens.
