Nigeria’s national grid experienced a system disturbance on Friday, March 7, 2025, causing widespread power outages, especially in Lagos.

This incident occurred despite the Federal Government’s celebration of a historic rise in power generation to 6,000MW.

According to reports, power generation suddenly dropped below 1,000MW at 2 pm, down from 4,000MW earlier in the day. The peak generation for Friday was 5,284MW at 5 am, but by 4 pm, it had decreased to 803MW as many generation plants were unable to supply the national grid.

The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company and the Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the system outage, apologizing to their customers and promising to restore power supply as soon as possible.

In a public notice, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company stated, “Dear esteemed customer, Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 07/03/2025 @ 14:00hrs, affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has yet to react to the incident, and the cause of the system disturbance is still unknown. This is the second time in 2025 that the national grid has suffered a disturbance, with the first incident occurring earlier in the year.

The collapse of the national grid has significant implications for Nigeria’s economy and citizens. The lack of electricity hinders economic growth, causes disruptions in businesses, and affects the daily lives of Nigerians. The incident also raises concerns about the reliability and efficiency of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

Despite the challenges, the Federal Government has been working to improve power generation in Nigeria. The government has invested in various projects aimed at increasing power generation, including the development of new power plants and the rehabilitation of existing ones.

The national grid collapse is a significant setback for Nigeria’s power sector. While the cause of the system disturbance is still unknown, it is essential for the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and take necessary steps to prevent future occurrences. The Federal Government’s efforts to improve power generation are commendable, but more needs to be done to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
