Okupe’s entry into politics was marked by his appointment as Special Assistant on Media to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He later served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Okupe was also the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention. He played active roles in various political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and the Accord Party.

The Labour Party, where Okupe served as the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign for the 2023 election, also paid tribute to him. The party described Okupe as a “committed and dedicated member” who worked tirelessly to promote the party’s ideals.
