A former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Rowland Owie, has strongly criticized the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Owie warned that this suspension may compromise the integrity of the Senate and set a dangerous precedent for legislative impunity.

The suspension was handed down after Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements. The Senate also cited her breach of Standing Orders following her claim of sexual harassment against Akpabio, which he denied.

Owie emphasized that the sexual harassment allegation must be thoroughly investigated, stressing the need for due process. “We are not in a Banana Republic. A senator remains a senator anytime, any day, even when suspended or as a non-serving senator. The 10th Senate must exercise caution to preserve the integrity of the institution,” he said.

The former lawmaker also suggested that Akpabio should step down to allow for an impartial investigation. “I have always warned that the 10th Senate must be careful to avoid sinking the Upper Chamber. If issues are brought before the Senate, there must be thorough investigations—nothing should be swept under the carpet,” he added.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension has sparked controversy, with many questioning the Senate’s decision. The senator was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms, and her office was locked, with her salaries and benefits halted.
