A mother, Mrs. Charity Obisco, has accused the management of a Lagos-based school, Belihan Schools, of abandoning her 10-year-old daughter, Mary, after she suffered an eye injury allegedly inflicted by a classmate.

The incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about the school’s responsibility in ensuring the safety and well-being of its students.

According to Charity, the incident occurred on October 11, 2024, when Mary was stabbed in the eye by a classmate. The school’s headmistress informed Charity of the incident and requested that she meet them at the hospital. Mary underwent surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, which was paid for by the mother of the boy who allegedly stabbed her.

However, Charity claimed that the school’s management stopped visiting or showing concern for her daughter’s well-being after the surgery. She alleged that the school’s owner, Olanike Adeola, instructed the teachers not to visit her daughter again. Charity stated that she had to bear the cost of her daughter’s medical expenses alone, without any support from the school.

In a reaction, Adeola described the incident as an “accident” and claimed that the school had taken necessary steps to support the injured pupil. She alleged that Charity had prevented the mother of the boy who allegedly stabbed her daughter from visiting or providing further support. Adeola also claimed that the school had paid for Mary’s medical expenses and had been in touch with Charity throughout her daughter’s recovery.

The incident has sparked controversy, with Charity accusing the school of neglect and Adeola denying the allegations. The police have commenced an investigation into the matter, and Charity has vowed to seek justice for her daughter. The Lagos State Ministry of Education has also been informed of the incident and has promised to investigate the matter.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of students in Lagos schools. Parents and guardians have called for greater accountability and transparency from schools in ensuring the safety and well-being of their students. The Lagos State Government has also been urged to take steps to ensure that schools in the state provide a safe and secure environment for students.

The incident involving Mary Obisco and Belihan Schools has highlighted the need for greater accountability and transparency from schools in ensuring the safety and well-being of their students. The controversy surrounding the incident has also raised questions about the responsibility of schools in providing support to students who suffer injuries or harm while in their care.
