The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared the air on rumors surrounding Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s resignation. According to the APC spokesperson in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, “To the best of my knowledge, there was no time the arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis”.
This clarification comes after Obasa was re-elected as Speaker on Monday, following Mojisola Meranda’s resignation from the position. The Lagos State House of Assembly had previously removed Obasa as Speaker in January, citing poor leadership, abuse of power, and intimidation of colleagues.
However, Obasa rejected the decision, stating that the lawmakers did not follow the constitutional process for his removal. He also denied corruption allegations, calling claims of financial misappropriation “impossible.”
In a bid to resolve the crisis, the Governor’s Advisory Council, led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, met with opposing lawmakers. Although there were speculations that Obasa would step down after 48 hours to allow a new Speaker from Lagos West, Oladejo’s statement has laid those rumors to rest.
Regarding the lawsuit filed by Obasa, Oladejo revealed that “I’m aware that any moment from now, Obasa will withdraw the lawsuit in the interest of renewed peace and progress of the House in particular and the party in general”.
