On Thursday, January 9, a Toyota Highlander Jeep collided with a truck on the Lekki-Epe Motorway, causing the driver’s car to catch fire and burn to death.

The midday collision happened after Okegun/Seaport, inner Epe, according to Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

A Sino tipper truck that was empty and a Toyota Highlander SUV (GGE 432 JC) were involved in the collision, he said.

Witnesses claim that the Highlander, which was moving inward towards Ajah, lost control, swerved over the motorway and struck the tipper truck that was going towards Epe.

The driver was trapped inside the burning Highlander as a result of the collision. The driver’s remains were retrieved after the fire was put out by LASTMA police and the Lagos State Fire Services (Epe Division). At the site, his body was given to family members.

“The safety and coordination of efforts at the scene were ensured by the crucial assistance of security personnel from the Epe Police Division during the rescue and recovery operations,” Bakare-Oki said.

He prayed for the grieving family to have the fortitude to bear their loss and offered his sympathies.

In order to avert preventable tragedies, Bakare-Oki urged drivers to prioritise road safety and maintain their vehicles.
