In a bid to enhance transparency, inclusivity, and citizen participation in governance, the Nigerian Presidency has introduced new guidelines for ministers’ quarterly Stakeholder and Citizens’ Engagement Meetings.
According to the Central Delivery Coordination Unit (CDCU) under the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, “This deliverable is to bridge the gap between the government and citizens, foster a good relationship between both parties, promote inclusivity, and ensure active citizen participation.”
The Central Delivery Coordination Unit(CDCU), emphasized that the meetings are expected to enhance public understanding of government policies while preventing misinterpretation which could be harmful to the administration.
Key Requirements:
- High-Level Interaction: Government officials must not only inform the public but also receive direct feedback from stakeholders, which will be considered for policy adjustments. The CDCU stressed that the engagement must be a “high-level interaction where government officials not only inform the public but also receive direct feedback from stakeholders.”
- Broad Participation: Meetings must involve civil society organizations, professional groups, the media, and ordinary citizens.
- Media Coverage: The mass media, including print, electronic, and online platforms, must be invited to cover these engagements.
- Transparency: Ministries must submit evidence of compliance, including invitation letters, attendance lists, and detailed reports of discussions.
- Feedback Process: Ministers and officials must respond to concerns raised by stakeholders during and after meetings. The CDCU noted that “ministers and ministry officials must be prepared to respond to concerns raised by stakeholders both during and after the meetings.”
These new guidelines demonstrate the Presidency’s commitment to citizen-centric governance, ensuring that government policies are shaped by public input.
