A heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds has caused widespread destruction in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. The storm damaged houses, schools, and church buildings in several communities, including Eleyewo, Ilu-Abo, and Bolorunduro, in Akure North Local Government Area.
Residents were seen trying to salvage their belongings after the Monday night rainstorm, which destroyed properties worth millions of naira. One of the victims, Lukman Haruna, stated that no lives were lost, but the storm caused extensive damage.
“The downpour damaged several houses, shops, church buildings, electric poles, schools, among others,” Haruna said. “The roof of a community school known as LA Primary School, in Ilu Abo, was also badly damaged by the rainstorm.”
Haruna added that the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Ilu Abo was severely affected, with the rainstorm destroying the iron roofing sheet and ceiling. The fence of another church, Possibility Church, also caved in.
“The rain also destroyed my shop and goods. It was just too heavy, as we could not salvage anything while the downpour lasted,” Haruna said. “Over 20 houses and churches were destroyed by the rain. So, we are begging Mr Governor (Lucky Aiyedatiwa) and other philanthropists to assist us.”
