The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission has advocated for the decentralization of policing throughout the nation and urged for a thorough overhaul of Nigeria’s security structure.

The Commission praised the accomplishments of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also referred to as Amotekun, in a statement commemorating the network’s fifth anniversary, calling it a revolutionary turning point in Nigeria’s security environment.

Amotekun was hailed as a pioneer in community policing by DAWN Director-General Dr. Seye Oyeleye, who also noted the organization’s outstanding accomplishments in boosting regional security and integration in the Southwest.

According to Oyeleye, “Amotekun has not only silenced critics but also exceeded expectations, proving wrong those who feared it might be misused for political or ethnic purposes.”

He thanked the security team for upholding professionalism and gaining the confidence of local communities by safeguarding all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliation or ethnicity.

The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission today commemorates the fifth anniversary of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, marking a transformative milestone in Nigeria’s security landscape.

The DAWN Commission reaffirmed its call for a decentralized policing system to replicate Amotekun’s success nationwide, ensuring improved security and better community engagement across Nigeria.

Established in Ibadan on January 9, 2020, Amotekun has emerged as a beacon of innovative community policing, demonstrating remarkable success in fostering regional security and integration across Nigeria’s southwest region.

“The Southwest Governors Forum (SWGF) and the DAWN Commission collaborated to create this first-of-its-kind security network, which has revolutionized the way local security issues are addressed.

After five years, Amotekun has surpassed expectations and unquestionably silenced detractors. The organization has demonstrated that state-level security forces can function competently and successfully while preserving community trust.

Amotekun’s record has dispelled early worries about possible abuse for racial or political ends. Rather, it has made a name for itself as a model of professionalism, gaining the trust of the community by defending all citizens, irrespective of their political or ethnic background.

“The success of Amotekun demonstrates the viability of state-led security initiatives in Nigeria’s federal structure and provides a template for other regions considering similar security frameworks.

The DAWN Commission specifically commends the dedication of Amotekun Commanders and operatives, some of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

Their bravery and commitment, despite a challenging environment, continue to ensure the safety and security of the Southwest region.

Our special commendation also goes to the Governors of Southwest States for their unwavering support and funding for this important agency,” he said, praising the operatives and the Southwest governors for their support and dedication.
