The Federal Aviation Administration (FAAN) has stated that the alternative runway 18L/36R will be utilized during the period in question.

At Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has stated that the 3.9-kilometer Runway 18R/36L will be closed for another time in order to undergo rehabilitation work.

Only two weeks have passed since the runway was reopened after being closed for repairs for almost eleven months. The closure, which is planned to take place on Monday and Tuesday, took place.

This information was included in a memo that was sent to the Airport Manager (AM)/Regional General Manager (RGM) for the Southwest Region on February 28, 2025. The statement was titled “Total Closure of Runway 18R/36L.” It was written by Mrs. J.U. Nwosu, who is the Head of Operations for FAAN.

“This is to bring to your notice the closure of runway 18R/36L due to the rehabilitation work (asphalt phase) at A2 Taxiway-link of the runway.

“It is considered necessary to close the runway due to the protruding construction equipment which may likely become a potential hazard to any landing and departing aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAAN) has stated that the alternative runway 18L/36R will be utilized during the period in question.

“However, all the technical departments whose facilities may be affected as a result of the closure are advised to constantly inspect those facilities to ensure everything is in place including but not limited to: the grass management, security must be beefed up, and 24-hour surveillance,” it said.

“It is pertinent to know that all the measures associated to total runway closure will be applied hence, adequate facility protection is necessary.”

The International Aircraft Association of Nigeria (FAAN) temporarily closed the international runway 18R/36L at Lagos Airport in March 2023 for repair that was initially intended to last for eight weeks.

Due to the fact that the repairs took longer than anticipated, the closure caused issues with air traffic and airline timetables. On runway 18L/36R, which is a shorter runway that is usually intended for domestic flights, both local and international carriers were operating during this time period.

Alongside runway 18L/36R, however, Links 2 and 3 of the taxiway are now operating, providing international airlines with an alternate route to take.
