The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced that Saturday, March 1, 2025, will mark the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

This declaration comes after the crescent moon was sighted on Friday, February 28, corresponding to the 29th day of Shaban.

The Sultan confirmed that reports of moon sightings from various regions of Nigeria were verified and accepted by the council, thereby confirming the commencement of Ramadan 1446. He urged all Muslims to dedicate the holy month to prayers, seeking Allah’s blessings and guidance for the nation and its leaders.

Ramadan Traditions and Significance

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred period of fasting, prayers, and devotion. Fasting during this month is one of the five pillars of Islam and is mandatory for all healthy Muslims. However, exemptions apply to young children, the sick, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating.

During Ramadan, working hours for public and private sector employees, as well as school schedules, are typically reduced to accommodate fasting and religious observances. Muslims are also encouraged to engage in acts of charity and support the less privileged during this period.

Global Ramadan Declarations

Saudi Arabia has also announced that Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon in the Kingdom ¹. Other countries, including Qatar and Oman, have made similar declarations.
