Adam Johnson, 29, died during an Elite League Ice Hockey match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers.

A hockey player was arrested after an opponent bleed to death at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena has been re-bailed.

Mattew Petgrave 33 was arrested on suspicion of the manslaughter of Adam Johnson 29 who died after a crash on the ice led to a skate coming into contact with his neck. The horrifying incident took place during an Elite League Ice Hockey match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers on October 2023, in front of thousands of fans.

South yorkshire police was initially arrested man in November 2023, who has since been re-bailed multiple times. Although the force has not confirmed the suspect’s identity, a public fundraising appeal has been posted under Petgrave’s name online.

A force spokesperson confirmed on Friday, February 28 that the individual has been re-bailed until May 29. They stated: “A man arrested on 14 November 2023 on suspicion of manslaughter was later bailed. He has been further re-bailed until 29 May 2025. The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to understand the circumstances surrounding Adam’s tragic death.”

Disturbing footage streamed online showed Adam, who played for the Panthers after spells in Germany and Sweden, bleeding heavily on the ice. Despite attempts to skate off, he collapsed again, with spectators watching in horror as efforts were made to save his life.
