A boat accident near the Agbura community in Bayelsa State has resulted in the rescue of eight police officers and one civilian by the Nigerian Navy.

While traveling to Yenagoa, the passengers ran into difficulties when their speedboat collided with a submerged wreck and overturned.

Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, said in a statement on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, that the prompt action of Navy forces stationed in the region made sure that all nine people and the three police officers’ rifles were successfully recovered.

The statement stated that on December 24, 2024, Nigerian Navy personnel stationed in the Agbura town in Bayelsa State successfully carried out a search and rescue operation, recovering nine passengers—eight police officers and one civilian—as well as three police officer firearms.

The officers’ speedboat capsized after colliding with a submerged wreck while they were traveling to Yenagoa. Following the administration of first aid, the injured were sent to the Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa for additional medical care.

Nevertheless, in order to stop future incidents, the submerged wreckage that caused the tragedy was identified and tagged.

The discovered firearms were secured and documented in preparation for their appropriate transfer to the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigerian Police Force. The Nigerian Navy’s cooperation and coordination with security authorities is demonstrated by this successful rescue effort.

According to the spokeswoman, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of the Naval Staff, praised the personnel’s prompt and professional response.
