Justice Yetunde Rukayat Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, has scheduled March 7 for the hearing of all pending applications in the suit filed by former Speaker of the Lagos State House Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa is challenging his removal as Speaker, which he claims was unlawful.

The lawsuit, filed on February 14, 2025, names the state government, the assembly, and the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, as defendants. During the latest proceeding, members of the assembly loyal to Meranda filed an application to join the suit as defendants.

Obasa’s removal has been a contentious issue, with the former Speaker alleging that his impeachment was orchestrated while he was away from the country. He claims that the state commissioner of police aided the process, and that security agents invaded the assembly complex and his homes.

The lawsuit is based on nine grounds, focusing on the interpretation of various sections of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Rules and Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa is seeking a declaration that his removal was unlawful and an order reinstating him as Speaker.

The court’s decision on March 7 will be crucial in determining the outcome of the suit and the future of the Lagos State House Assembly’s leadership.
