The proposal to create 31 new states in Nigeria has received mixed reactions from citizens. Proponents believe it will intensify development across the country, while opponents fear it will lead to more bureaucratic drains on the nation’s purse.

The editorial board of The Guardian argues that instead of creating new states, the focus should be on empowering existing states to harness their human and material potential. This can be achieved by utilizing the 774 local governments and regional development commissions to drive development.

The creation of new states is a complex process that requires approval from two-thirds of members in the National Assembly and state Assemblies, as well as a referendum by the people of the affected areas. Given the economic hardship and soaring living costs, prioritizing the creation of new states may be insensitive and a distraction from the real issues.

The editorial board suggests that the government should focus on generating appropriate funding for development commissions, such as the Niger Delta Development Agency (NDDC), and ensuring that existing states concentrate on the 774 Local Government Areas as development hubs. By doing so, Nigeria can achieve sustainable growth and development without the need for creating new states.
