A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has appointed Oba Oladipo Olaitan as its new leader, following the demise of Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

The appointment was made during a meeting held at Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

Oba Olaitan, a former deputy leader of the faction, will serve as the acting leader until after Adebanjo’s final burial, when he will assume the office as substantive leader. With over 45 years of membership in Afenifere, Olaitan has held various positions, including National Financial Secretary under Chief Reuben Fasoranti and Deputy Leader under Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

The group also expressed concerns over the country’s worsening security situation, citing the case of Prince Eniola Ojajuni, who has been held captive by kidnappers for almost a week. Afenifere urged state governments and security agencies to take proactive measures to address the issue.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Olaitan pledged to uphold Afenifere’s ideals and advocate for restructuring and true federalism. He also emphasized the importance of unity within the organization
