Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed his country’s “resistance” and “heroism” on Monday, marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion. European leaders arrived in Kyiv to show solidarity with Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion in 2022, sparking the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II. Tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed, cities destroyed, and millions displaced.

However, the conflict has taken a new turn with Donald Trump’s return to the White House, threatening to upend the coalition supporting Ukraine. Trump’s diplomatic outreach to Moscow and skepticism about long-term support for Kyiv have raised concerns.

Russian troops continue to advance, and Moscow has been emboldened by Trump’s stance. Zelensky thanked European leaders for their support, saying, “We are fighting for survival, and Europe’s destiny is at stake.”

EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv, stating, “Ukraine is Europe. In this fight for survival, it’s not only Ukraine’s destiny that’s at stake, it’s Europe’s destiny.”

The European Union imposed new sanctions on Russia, targeting its “shadow fleet” and propaganda outlets. EU Council President Antonio Costa reiterated support for Ukraine, saying, “In Ukraine, about Ukraine, with Ukraine.”

Zelensky hopes the gathering of European leaders will be a “turning point” in the conflict. He seeks security guarantees to prevent Russia from using any ceasefire to rearm and attack again.

On Sunday, Zelensky offered to resign if it meant Ukraine could join NATO. The Kremlin has refused to give up territory captured in Ukraine and opposes Ukrainian NATO membership.

Trump’s push for a swift end to the war has triggered alarm in Kyiv and Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron plans to tell Trump, “You cannot be weak in the face of President Putin.”

Ukrainian soldiers expressed concerns about Trump’s bid for a swift ceasefire, fearing it could lead to further Russian advances. “It scares me more. Because the bloodiest moments always come before a truce,” said Andrii, a 25-year-old soldier.

As the conflict continues, Ukraine remains determined to defend its territory and sovereignty. Zelensky’s call for support from European leaders has reaffirmed the importance of unity in the face of Russian aggression.
