Kaduna State University’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter has suspended its six-day strike, which began on February 18.

The decision to suspend the strike was made on Saturday, according to Dr. Peter Adamu, Chairman of ASUU, KASU chapter.

The government’s demonstration of goodwill in resolving the impasse was cited as the reason for the suspension. Specifically, the government released funds to pay 60% of the September 2017 withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five sessions.

A timeline for the payment of the five months, May to September 2022 withheld salaries, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), Pension remittance (2009 to 2019), Death benefits, and Group Life Assurance was also agreed upon.

The union expressed its appreciation to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for his swift intervention and leadership in resolving the issues that led to the strike action. The university management, Commissioners for Education, Sports, and other stakeholders were also thanked for their roles in ensuring a quick resolution of the impasse.

The strike was initially called due to unresolved welfare concerns, including nonpayment of salaries, promotion arrears, and pension remittances. The union had met with Governor Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, to discuss these issues, and the governor had committed to paying the unpaid entitlements.

With the suspension of the strike, academic activities are expected to resume at Kaduna State University. Dr. Adamu called on all academic staff to resume duties and continue rendering invaluable services to the university community.
