The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement condemning Israel’s attack on the Qatari capital, Doha, and calling for de-escalation in the region.

The statement, agreed upon by all 15 members, including the United States, highlights the importance of respecting Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This development comes after Israel’s unprecedented attack on Doha, which targeted Hamas leaders and resulted in the deaths of five Hamas members and a Qatari security force member.

The US, traditionally a strong ally of Israel, appeared to deliver a rebuke to Israel, reflecting President Donald Trump’s purported unhappiness with the attack.

Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea emphasized that “unilateral bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation working very hard and bravely taking risks alongside the United States to broker peace, does not advance Israel’s or America’s goals.” She also made it clear that “the US cannot and will not defend Israel’s attack on Qatar.”

The Security Council statement underscored Qatar’s crucial role as a key mediator in peace talks between Israel and Hamas.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani expressed his country’s commitment to continuing humanitarian and diplomatic efforts while emphasizing that Doha would not tolerate further breaches of its security and sovereignty.

He criticized Israel’s leaders as “arrogant” and suggested that the timing of the attacks during mediation efforts showed that the country intended to derail them.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo described Qatar as a “valued partner in advancing peacemaking” and expressed concern over Israel’s recklessness.

The strikes represented an “alarming escalation,” and the Israeli attack on Doha potentially opens a new and perilous chapter in the devastating conflict, seriously threatening regional peace and stability.

The international community has rallied behind Qatar, with widespread support for the country and condemnation of Israel’s actions. Algeria’s ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, sharply criticized Israel’s behavior, stating that “Israel behaves as if law does not exist, as if borders are illusions, as if sovereignty itself is a dispensable motion, as if the UN charter is an ephemeral text.”

He added that Israel’s actions are “a sign of madness” and the conduct of an extremist government emboldened by immunity and impunity.

In contrast, Israel’s UN envoy, Danny Danon, defended the strike, saying that Israel targeted Hamas leaders who had directed attacks planned in the “luxury confines of Doha.” He emphasized that these were the “sole targets” of the attack and that they were “terrorists” rather than legitimate politicians, diplomats, or representatives.

The situation remains volatile, with potential implications for regional stability and global relations. “The world clearly stands behind Qatar,” and there is widespread condemnation of Israel’s actions.

The coming hours and days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of this conflict and the potential for further escalation.

While the UN Security Council’s condemnation of Israel’s attack on Qatar marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, critics are of the opinion that the global agency could do more than condemnation.

As a global agency with members all over the world, critics argue that a vote could have been arranged for adequate sanctions and possibly military aids for the defenseless people people country and people who have been recipients of Israeli onslaughts.

They wager that a joint military team of the willing could relinquish power from Israeli military on the foreign soil and prove to Netanyahu that there are laws.

Of what relevance are the laws that cannot be implemented? If Netanyahu acts unchecked, it goes further to check the complicity of the member states of the UN and perhaps, the UN as a body in the bloody game.

It is public knowledge that the United States is in support of the actions and activities of the Israeli government on the Palestinian people with the battle raging beyond human comprehension.

Since Netanyahu or the influence of the United States alone does not make the United Nations, critics wonder why the collective votes of other states for  far reaching sanctions on Israel cold not be effected.

The decisive response of the international community will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of the region and determining the extent to which nations will respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries.
