Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has completed a season-long loan move to Turkish giants Trabzonspor, with the deal finalized just before the close of Turkey’s transfer window on Friday.

The Cameroon international, 29, had fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford under new boss Ruben Amorim, having failed to make an appearance in United’s opening three Premier League matches.

His only outing this season came in the club’s shock Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town.

United confirmed the deal on Thursday evening, issuing a short statement: “We would like to wish Andre good luck.” The move remains subject to international clearance and final registration.

From £47m Signing to Loan Exit

Onana was signed by former manager Erik ten Hag from Inter Milan for £47.2m in July 2023, brought in as the long-term replacement for David de Gea.

He went on to make 102 appearances for the Red Devils and played a role in their 2024 FA Cup triumph.

However, his United career was marred by inconsistency and high-profile errors, particularly in the Premier League and Champions League campaigns of 2024 season.

Amorim’s summer revival plans saw United move swiftly to overhaul their goalkeeping department.

Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens, 23, arrived from Royal Antwerp on deadline day in a deal worth an initial €21m (£18.1m) plus add-ons, while Altay Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton provide further depth.

Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano reports that Trabzonspor will cover the entirety of Onana’s wages during his loan spell.

What Next for United’s Goalkeepers?

With Onana now in Turkey, the spotlight shifts to Amorim’s immediate No.1. Altay Bayindir has started United’s first three league fixtures — against Arsenal, Fulham, and Burnley — but has yet to record a clean sheet.

That opens the door for Lammens, who despite his age is highly rated and tipped as a future successor to Thibaut Courtois in Belgium’s national team.

He arrives at Old Trafford with only one full season of top-flight experience at Antwerp but has been signed to challenge for the shirt immediately.

Speaking on Deadline Day, Sky Sports News reporter Danyal Khan said:

“Manchester United have signed Senne Lammens with an eye to the now as well as the future. While they considered more experienced options like Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa, United ultimately felt Lammens had the right blend of potential and readiness to compete for the No.1 spot right away.”

A Fresh Start for Onana

For Onana, the move offers a chance to rediscover form and confidence after a turbulent two-year spell in England.

Trabzonspor, who are aiming to challenge for the Turkish Super Lig title, have been active in the market and see the Cameroonian as a marquee addition to their squad.

The former Ajax and Inter keeper leaves United with both highs — notably lifting the FA Cup — and lows, including being dropped just a year after his high-profile arrival.

His future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, but for now, the focus is on reviving his career in Turkey.
