Alexander Isak: Liverpool’s new record-breaking weapon

Liverpool fans have seen the damage Alexander Isak can do — only, until now, he has done it to them; a clinical debut finish at Anfield, a run in behind Ibrahima Konaté before a cool prod past Alisson Becker, a thunderbolt into the top corner at St James’ Park and that trademark, ice-cold winner at Wembley.

But this weekend, they will welcome him into their ranks. The club’s record signing from Newcastle is finally available to make his debut, and anticipation is building ahead of Sunday’s trip to Burnley.

Whether he starts or emerges from the bench after limited playing time during his drawn-out move, there will be a buzz every time he touches the ball.

Those four goals and one assist in six games against Liverpool have already showcased his appetite for the big stage, his range of finishing, and his ability to turn tight games with one moment of brilliance.

Now, the question is simple: how will Arne Slot make the most of his new star while keeping balance in a forward line already firing on all cylinders?

Fitting Isak into a Free-Scoring Attack

Liverpool’s attack hardly looks like it needs help, Slot’s side are already the Premier League’s top scorers after three matches, with eight goals shared across a front line brimming with movement, pace, and versatility. Adding Isak into that mix is both a luxury and a tactical puzzle.

The Swede is not just a penalty-box striker, he thrives on clever runs in behind, sharp link-up play, and even strikes from distance — six of his 23 league goals last season came from outside the area. His presence guarantees goals but also demands subtle tweaks to Liverpool’s shape.

Ekitike: Partner, Rival, or Rotation?

No one is watching Isak’s arrival more closely than Hugo Ekitike, the Frenchman has made a fast start to life at Anfield, scoring in each of his first three appearances, including in the Community Shield final loss to Crystal Palace. His pace and versatility have made him an instant hit, but his role now hangs in the balance.

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher predicts that Isak will become Slot’s first-choice striker, meaning Ekitike will either rotate through the middle or shift into a wider role.

That wouldn’t be unfamiliar — at Eintracht Frankfurt last season, he frequently drifted into channels during build-up, combining with teammates before arriving late in the box, He has already shown a similar instinct at Liverpool, often pulling to the left to connect with Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz.

That kind of movement could dovetail nicely with Isak’s penalty-box instincts, especially if Slot experiments with a front two in certain matches. But more likely, the two will rotate, protecting Isak — who has had injuries in the past — across what will again be a marathon season.

Gakpo’s Value in Jeopardy?

If Ekitike adapts to a wide role, then it is Gakpo who risks being squeezed. The Dutchman has started each game on the left this season and leads Liverpool in assists, chances created, and shots taken. Yet the arrival of a record signing often means someone has to give way.

Slot may choose to alternate Gakpo and Ekitike on the left depending on the opponent, while also blooding teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha, who has already thrilled supporters with his direct play.

Gakpo, however, has been underestimated before — and usually responds with productivity. His role in the squad may change, but his value cannot be overlooked.

Can Isak Spark Salah?

The most intriguing subplot may involve Mohamed Salah; despite two goal involvements in three games, the Egyptian has looked below his usual electrifying best. Isak could be the spark to reignite him.

Defenders will no longer be able to fixate on Salah with Isak’s runs pulling them apart. Moreover, Isak has grown into a capable creator, registering six assists and 42 chances created in the league last season. His ability to occupy centre-backs and link play could free Salah to rediscover his devastating final-third influence.

But Slot must also plan for Salah’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations this winter, when Liverpool have often struggled without him. Isak’s versatility could help soften that blow, ensuring continuity in attack.

A Frightening Arsenal of Options

For rivals, the prospect of Isak joining an already high-scoring Liverpool is daunting. Slot has options everywhere — power in Ekitike, control in Gakpo, intelligence in Wirtz, flair in Ngumoha, and the proven ruthlessness of Salah. Isak brings another layer: an all-round forward who can both finish chances and create them.

The key will be balance, too many changes could disrupt the chemistry of a front line that already looks sharp. But if Slot finds the right combinations, Isak could be the signing that pushes Liverpool from title challengers to title favourites.

A Debut to Watch

Burnley away might not be the most glamorous stage, but when Isak steps onto the pitch in red for the first time, all eyes will be on him. A fast start would not only help his own adaptation but also send a message across the league: Liverpool are armed with yet another weapon.

For years, Isak has been Liverpool’s tormentor. Now, he could be their difference-maker.
