Russian drones deliberately target Poland, says Foreign Minister Sikorski

Poland‘s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has accused Russia of deliberately targeting Poland with drones, dismissing claims that the drones veered off course as “lies and denials”.
In a statement, Sikorski expressed gratitude to the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany for their assistance in responding to the incursions. “Property was damaged, but, fortunately, nobody was injured,” he said, highlighting that Russian aggression extends beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Sikorski emphasized that Russia’s actions are a clear attempt to intimidate Poland, the European Union, and NATO.
“Even though Nato is not at war, Russian aggression strikes beyond Ukraine,” he noted. The Foreign Minister also criticized Russia’s claims that there is no evidence the drones were Russian, with some even suggesting Ukrainian provocation.
“Lies and denials” are typical responses from the Soviet era, Sikorski remarked, underscoring the predictability of Russia’s reaction.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with NATO and European Union leaders expressing their support for Poland.
EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said, “what he wants to do is to test us… And every time he’s bolder, because he’s able to be bolder because our response hasn’t been strong enough.”
NATO’s Secretary-General Mark Rutte denounced Moscow’s “reckless behavior” and called on Putin to halt the war, which he believes is now being waged on civilians.

NATO has taken decisive action in response to the drone incursion. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows member countries to hold urgent talks when they feel their territorial integrity, political independence, or security is at risk.
This marks only the eighth time this measure has been used. Tusk warned that the situation is inching closer to “open conflict” and emphasized the need for a strong response from NATO allies.
Russia’s defense ministry has denied targeting Poland, and the Russian embassy in Warsaw stated that Poland has failed to provide evidence of the Russian origin of the objects that entered Polish airspace.
However, Sikorski remains confident that the entry of Russian drones into Polish airspace was planned. “The Kremlin is again mocking President Trump’s peace efforts,” he added, emphasizing Poland’s solidarity with Ukraine.
Sikorski reaffirmed Poland’s commitment to standing by the brave people of Ukraine. “Poland, the EU, and Nato will not be intimidated, and we will continue to stand by the brave people of Ukraine,” he said.
He also emphasized that Russia’s attempt to rebuild its empire is doomed to fail. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the airspace violation as a “dangerous precedent” for Europe and urged a strong response from Kyiv’s Western allies.
The incident highlights the escalating tensions between Russia and NATO, with Poland playing a critical role in the conflict. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains on high alert, with concerns about the potential for further escalation and humanitarian crises.

The solidarity shown by NATO allies and the EU demonstrates their commitment to supporting Poland and Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
