The dramatic release of Israeli-Russian academic Elizabeth Tsurkov from Iraqi captivity has brought relief to her family and sparked widespread attention to the complexities of international diplomacy.

Tsurkov, a Princeton University student, was held by the Iraqi armed group Kata’ib Hezbollah for over two years, sparking concerns about her safety and well-being.

US President Donald Trump announced her release, stating that she was “safely in the American Embassy in Iraq after being tortured for many months”.

Tsurkov, who holds both Israeli and Russian passports, disappeared in Baghdad in March 2023 while conducting academic research. Her case remained secret for months until Israel’s prime minister’s office confirmed in July 2023 that she had been abducted.

The Iraqi government was accused of being responsible for her safety, and her family and supporters launched a campaign for her release.

In November 2023, Iraqi state television aired footage of Tsurkov in which she claimed to be working for both Mossad and the CIA, allegations her family rejected as coerced confessions.

Tsurkov’s release was confirmed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who emphasized that the government would not tolerate any compromise in enforcing the law and upholding the authority of the state.

“We reaffirm, once again, that we will not tolerate any compromise in enforcing the law and upholding the authority of the state, nor will we allow anyone to undermine the reputation of Iraq and its people,” he said.

After Trump’s announcement, Tsurkov’s sister Emma expressed relief in a post on X, saying, “my entire family is incredibly happy. We cannot wait to see Elizabeth and give her all the love we have been waiting to share for 903 days. We are so thankful to President Trump and his Special Envoy, Adam Boehler. If Adam had not made my sister’s return his personal mission, I do not know where we would be.”

The release of Tsurkov highlights the complexities of international diplomacy and the challenges of securing the release of captives held by armed groups. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu credited months of work led by Gal Hirsch, Israel’s coordinator for captives and missing people, for Tsurkov’s release.

“Through a team effort … after great efforts, we succeeded in bringing about her release,” Netanyahu said. The precise terms of her release remain unclear, but it is believed that diplomatic efforts by the US and Israel played a key role in securing her freedom.
