Global Sumud Flotilla attacked again in Tunisia, remains undeterred

Global Sumud Flotilla– The Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission aiming to break Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, has faced two consecutive drone attacks in Tunisian waters.

Despite these incidents, the flotilla remains committed to its cause, with activists and crew members expressing determination to continue their journey.

On Monday, a drone struck the Family Boat, a vessel part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, causing a fire.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. The Tunisian National Guard, however, denied detecting any drones near the ship.

The next night, another drone attack targeted the Alma ship, which sailed under the UK flag. The attack resulted in fire damage to the top deck, but the fire was quickly extinguished, and all crew members were reported safe.

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for human rights in occupied Palestine, shared insights into the second attack, suggesting that video evidence pointed to a drone dropping an incendiary device.

Expert sources indicated that the device might have been an incendiary grenade wrapped in plastic materials dipped in fuel. Albanese’s analysis highlights the severity of the attacks and raises concerns about the flotilla’s safety.

Despite the attacks, the Global Sumud Flotilla remains resolute in its mission. Saif Abukeshek, a Palestinian activist and member of the flotilla’s steering committee, emphasized the importance of perseverance. “this genocidal government has been bombing Palestinians for 78 years.

They have been committing genocide for 22 months, and Palestinians are still able to wake up every day looking for a better day,” Abukeshek said. “If we are inspired by the resilience of such people, how can we give up by just two incidents that we have faced?” The flotilla plans to set sail for Gaza, undeterred by the recent attacks.

The Global Sumud Flotilla has garnered significant international support, with thousands rallying in solidarity in Italy. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and carried signs, demonstrating their backing for the mission to bring aid to Gaza.

The flotilla’s efforts have also drawn attention to Israel’s history of attacking and intercepting Gaza-bound flotillas, with notable incidents dating back to 2010.

The Global Sumud Flotilla’s determination to reach Gaza despite facing drone attacks reflects the complexity and passion surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, aware of the humanitarian implications and the potential consequences of escalated tensions.

With the flotilla’s journey ongoing, one thing is clear: the pursuit of humanitarian aid and solidarity will continue, even in the face of adversity.
