A Deputy Superintendent of the NSCDC, Adekunle Emmanuel, was accidentally shot by a colleague in Abuja and later died at Maitama General Hospital

A tragic incident has shaken the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) following the accidental shooting and death of a senior officer in Abuja.

The unfortunate event occurred at Life Camp in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on the morning of Sunday, September 7, 2025.

According to reports, the deceased officer, identified as Deputy Superintendent of Corps (DSC) Adekunle Emmanuel, was hit by a bullet discharged unintentionally by one of his colleagues.

The incident happened at approximately 10:20 a.m. while the officers were on assignment.

Security analysts revealed that the officers were en route from Corner View Hotel to the residence of a principal at Lias Estate when the fatal mishap occurred.

In the course of the movement, the operative’s firearm discharged accidentally, striking Emmanuel on the upper part of his left arm, just above the bicep.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the shooting was not linked to any confrontation or security breach, but rather a case of negligent handling of a service weapon.

The sound of gunfire reportedly caused panic within the immediate environment, before the team quickly realized the severity of what had happened.

Colleagues acted swiftly to save Emmanuel’s life. He was immediately evacuated from the scene and rushed to Maitama General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Sadly, despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

His remains have since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy, as part of standard procedure.

The NSCDC operative responsible for the accidental discharge has been arrested and is currently in custody.

Preliminary interrogation has begun to establish the exact circumstances that led to the tragic shooting.

Sources within the Corps confirm that the officer is cooperating with investigators, while internal disciplinary protocols have also been activated.

The sudden death of DSC Emmanuel has sent shockwaves across the NSCDC and the wider security community.

Colleagues described him as a committed and disciplined officer who had served with loyalty and dedication. His death is being regarded as a painful and avoidable loss.

The NSCDC is expected to release an official statement in the coming days, addressing the incident and reassuring the public of its commitment to professionalism.

Security experts, however, have emphasized the urgent need for improved firearms safety training and stricter enforcement of weapon-handling protocols within the Corps to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.

Investigations are still ongoing to determine whether the fatal discharge was purely accidental or due to negligence.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased officer is being notified, and arrangements for burial will be made after the conclusion of the autopsy and official processes.

This incident once again brings to the fore the risks security operatives face in the line of duty—not only from external threats but also from lapses in safety procedures among colleagues.
