Thailand has a new prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, a businessman and veteran politician who has vowed to perform his duties “with honesty and righteousness” amid the country’s ongoing political turmoil.
Anutin’s appointment was formalized after King Maha Vajiralongkorn endorsed him as the nation’s leader in a ceremony at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters in Bangkok on September 7, 2025.
According to Secretary-General of Thailand’s lower house of parliament Arpath Sukhanunth, “His Majesty the King has endorsed Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul to be prime minister from now onwards.”
Anutin expressed his gratitude, stating it was a “limitless blessing and honour” for him and his family. He pledged to work at his “full capacity with honesty and morality worthy of His Majesty’s trust, for the benefit of the people and for the country”.

Anutin’s Bhumjaithai Party secured backing from the dominant People’s Party on the condition that he dissolves parliament within four months to hold fresh elections.
A survey showed 59.24% of voters want the parliament dissolved as soon as possible, while 27% prefer it to happen within four months. Almost 60% of respondents also support amendments to the country’s constitution.
Anutin’s appointment follows the ousting of the populist Shinawatra clan’s Pheu Thai party, which had dominated the top office since the 2023 elections.
Dynasty heiress Paetongtarn Shinawatra was sacked as prime minister by court order last month due to ethical misconduct related to her handling of a border dispute with Cambodia.
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the dynasty patriarch, has also faced legal challenges, including a pending Supreme Court ruling on his hospital stay after returning from exile in August 2023.
