Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan for the rest of the season, in a move that will see him double his salary.

The 29-year-old will travel to Turkey on Thursday once both clubs finalise the agreement, which includes a significant signing-on fee and bonuses.

United will not receive a loan fee, and there is no option for Trabzonspor to make the deal permanent when it expires on June 30.

Onana, signed from Inter Milan for £47.2m two years ago, has endured a difficult spell at Old Trafford, marked by inconsistency and a string of high-profile errors.

His only appearance this season came in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, where another mistake overshadowed his performance, Altay Bayindir has s started all three Premier League matches.

The Cameroonian’s struggles were compounded by a hamstring injury sustained on his second day of pre-season, which ruled him out of United’s summer preparations.

Although United had previously quoted Monaco £30m for Onana and weighed up alternatives such as Martínez and Lammens, the club’s decision to proceed with Lammens effectively opened the door for his departure.

With Onana now heading to Turkey, Lammens is expected to step into the No.1 role, supported by Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton.
