Kano Police arrest nine suspects after a violent mob attack on Garko Division left one dead, officers injured, and vehicles destroyed. Investigations ongoing.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested nine suspects following a violent mob attack on the Garko Police Division that left one person dead, several others injured, and public property destroyed.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed the development in a statement released on Saturday.

He explained that the incident took place on September 5, 2025, after officers from the Wudil Area Command transferred three individuals to the Garko Police Division for questioning.

The suspects were being investigated in connection with a culpable homicide case reported a day earlier in Garko Local Government Area.

According to Kiyawa, while the suspects were being interrogated, word quickly spread within the community, sparking outrage among residents.

Within a short period, an angry mob armed with sticks, stones, and other weapons gathered at the station.

The crowd, incensed by the reported killing, demanded immediate justice and attempted to storm the facility in order to lynch the detained suspects.

The protest soon turned into full-blown violence. The mob overran the police premises, hurling stones that shattered windows and damaging office property.

A police patrol vehicle was set ablaze, while three operational vehicles belonging to the Kano State Hisbah Board were also destroyed in the attack.

During the rampage, three police officers sustained varying degrees of injury. They were immediately rushed to Wudil Hospital, where they are still receiving treatment.

In the midst of the violent confrontation, a burning tire exploded and struck one of the attackers, killing him instantly.

Three other individuals also sustained injuries as the mob clashed with security operatives.

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, ordered a swift containment operation to prevent the crisis from spreading.

He also engaged critical community stakeholders, including traditional leaders and youth groups, in peace talks.

This combined approach, according to Kiyawa, was instrumental in calming the situation and restoring order in Garko town.

So far, nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the mob action. The Police Command confirmed that investigations are continuing, not only to identify more individuals who participated in the violent assault on the station, but also to probe the original homicide case that triggered the unrest.

In his statement, Kiyawa cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.

He stressed that mob action and jungle justice undermine the rule of law, disrupt peace, and endanger innocent lives.

He further appealed to residents of Kano State to always seek justice through recognised security agencies and judicial processes rather than resorting to violence.

“The Police Command will continue to ensure the protection of lives and property,” he assured, “but citizens must cooperate by channelling grievances through lawful means.”
