The Federal Government has pledged support for families and survivors of the Borgu boat mishap in Niger, as 32 lives were lost and 50 rescued.

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of 32 people in Borgu, Niger State.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, also left about 50 others rescued.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, conveyed the government’s condolences in a statement he personally signed.

He described the news of the disaster as heartbreaking, especially as it comes barely four months after devastating floods wreaked havoc in Mokwa, another community in Niger State.

According to Idris, the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will work closely with the Niger State Government to provide immediate relief and support for the victims’ families as well as survivors.

He assured that the government will not abandon those affected in their time of grief and need.

While commending the Niger State Government and its State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for their prompt and courageous rescue operation, the Minister noted that their swift action ensured that every passenger aboard the ill-fated boat was properly accounted for.

“Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones, and to the people and government of Niger State.

“The Federal Government stands in solidarity with you at this difficult time. We shall do everything necessary, through NEMA, to support the affected families and survivors,” Idris said.

The Minister further used the opportunity to caution Nigerians on the need to prioritise safety while travelling across inland waterways.

He stressed that no passenger should embark on a boat journey without wearing life jackets or other protective gear, warning that such precautions often make the difference between life and death in emergency situations.

To further address the recurring tragedies on waterways, Idris disclosed that the Federal Government has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to embark on an extensive nationwide sensitisation campaign.

The campaign, he said, will be aimed at raising awareness about safety measures and best practices for water transportation across the country.

Idris emphasised that while accidents may sometimes be unavoidable, collective adherence to safety rules and proper public enlightenment can significantly reduce loss of lives in similar situations.
