An unbeaten domestic treble marked a dream debut season in English football for Sonia Bompastor, but the Chelsea boss insists her side cannot afford to rest on their laurels as they prepare to begin their Women’s Super League title defence against Manchester City on Friday night.
Bompastor, who succeeded Emma Hayes last summer, delivered Chelsea’s sixth straight WSL crown, as well as FA Cup and League Cup glory, becoming the first manager in the league’s 22-game era to oversee an unbeaten season.

“It was an incredible summer for the club,” Bompastor told Sky Sports. “Winning all three domestic trophies in a transitional year was a huge achievement. But now everything is new again, and we need to compete in the most competitive league. We are ready for that.”
‘I’m in a better place this season’
Twelve months ago, questions surrounded Chelsea’s ability to maintain their dominance without Hayes. Bompastor quickly answered them, but she feels even more settled now.
“I remember media day last year, I didn’t know anyone,” she said. “Now I know the club, the league, the competition. Last season was about making sure the players understood our game model. This season we can go further in terms of details.
“The mentality here is special — that winning mentality made the difference. But now it won’t be a surprise if we succeed. Everyone wants to beat Chelsea, so we have to be ready mentally, physically and tactically.”

Raising standards and avoiding comfort zones
Bompastor has stressed the importance of evolution to avoid complacency. She has freshened up her coaching staff and introduced new tools such as enhanced video feedback to push players out of their comfort zones.
“I don’t want anyone in the comfort zone,” she explained. “That’s when problems come. I want to challenge my players every day. From the beginning of the season, I want us to compete in every competition. The club is ambitious, I’m ambitious, and the players are ambitious.”
She added: “We want more consistency in our performances. Winning is part of our DNA, but we also want to dominate more in possession and out of possession.”

New signings add depth
Chelsea have also bolstered their squad with the arrivals of goalkeeper Livia Peng, experienced shot-stopper Becky Spencer, Champions League-winning defender Ellie Carpenter, and highly-rated forward Mara Alber.

“I’m really pleased with the new additions,” Bompastor said. “Depth, quality and talent are essential if you want to stay competitive. These players bring energy and great personalities too, which is important. This squad is really special.”
WSL opener sets the tone
Chelsea’s title defence begins with a blockbuster clash against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s a challenge to start with City, but as competitive people, that’s what we want,” Bompastor said. “Clubs have invested heavily this summer, which will make the league even tougher. But if you want to be the best version of yourself, you need that healthy competition.
“It will be more difficult to win this season — but Chelsea are ready to compete.”
