Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has tipped new signing Kelechi Iheanacho to thrive in Glasgow and win over the club’s supporters after completing a free transfer to the Scottish champions.
The 28-year-old Nigeria striker agreed a one-year deal just a day after leaving Sevilla, with his arrival confirmed hours before the Europa League registration deadline.
The move comes amid criticism from sections of the fanbase over the club’s failure to sign a striker before the transfer window closed.
Rodgers, who previously managed Iheanacho at Leicester City, expressed confidence that the forward’s quality and experience will make him a valuable addition.
“He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work-rate,” Rodgers told Celtic’s website. “He has great experience and he is right in his peak years, so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”
The signing follows backlash from the Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Clubs, who criticised the decision to sell Adam Idah to Swansea City without securing a replacement, accusing the hierarchy of “failure to strengthen the squad” and “disarray witnessed on the final evening of the transfer window.”
Rodgers, however, insisted Iheanacho is the right fit to lead his attack:
“He will love being at Celtic and I believe our fans will love what he brings.”
Iheanacho, who began his professional career at Manchester City, won the League Cup in 2016 before making over 200 appearances for Leicester, where he helped the Foxes lift the FA Cup in 2021.
Capped 59 times for Nigeria, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
After leaving Leicester in 2023, Iheanacho joined Sevilla but spent the latter half of last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
