Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission schedules local government elections for August 29, 2026, urging parties to collect nomination forms and prepare
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has officially scheduled the elections for local government chairmen and councillors across the state to hold on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

This announcement sets in motion the preparatory process for political parties and aspiring candidates ahead of the next round of local government polls in Anambra State.
In a formal statement, Hon. Genevieve C. Osakwe, Chairman of ANSIEC, called on all registered political parties to begin the process of obtaining nomination forms from the Commission’s office located along the Enugu-Awka Expressway.
The Chairman noted that the call is in strict compliance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and Section 23 of the Anambra State Electoral Law, 2024, which grant the Commission the authority to issue election notices and oversee the electoral process at the local government level.
ANSIEC also announced that the official election timetable and schedule of activities will be available for collection from the Commission’s office starting Friday, November 28, 2025.
The timetable is expected to include key dates for party primaries, submission of nomination forms, campaign periods, and other essential milestones leading up to the election day.
The upcoming elections will follow the last local government polls held in 2024, during which the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won all 21 council seats in the state after other political parties withdrew from the contest.

The 2026 elections, however, are anticipated to witness a more competitive environment, as political parties prepare to participate fully and engage voters across all local government areas.
The Commission’s announcement underscores its commitment to transparent, credible, and orderly electoral processes in Anambra State.
Political stakeholders, including candidates, party officials, and voters, are urged to adhere to the guidelines provided by ANSIEC to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
With the official election date now set, the stage is firmly laid for political mobilization, civic engagement, and democratic participation across the state.
