Marc Guehi’s proposed £35m switch to Liverpool fell through on Deadline Day after Crystal Palace pulled the plug when they were unable to sign a replacement for their captain.

The 24-year-old defender had even been given permission to undergo a medical in London after his standout display in the 3-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday.

A deal sheet was submitted to the Premier League to extend negotiations beyond the 7pm deadline according to David Ornstein.

But with Palace unable to land Brighton’s Igor Julio—who opted to join West Ham instead—the Eagles hierarchy made the late decision to cancel the deal following direct talks with Guehi and head coach Oliver Glasner.

Glasner’s stance decisive

Glasner had made clear his opposition to selling one of his key players without a Premier League-ready replacement.

“We have to [keep Guehi] if we want to play a successful season,” Glasner told Sky Sports after the Villa win. “If we don’t have the right replacement, for me it’s clear to keep him.”

Palace did complete a £20.8m deal for 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse, but Glasner insisted he wanted an experienced option.

The club also explored late moves for Strahinja Pavlovic (AC Milan), Axel Disasi (Chelsea) and even discussed possible deals for Manuel Akanji and Joe Gomez, but time ran out before any agreement could be struck.

What next for Liverpool?

The collapse leaves Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez as their only senior centre-backs, alongside 18-year-old summer signing Giovanni Leoni.

Versatile players such as Wataru Endo, Andy Robertson and Ryan Gravenberch have also been deployed at centre-back in the past, but Arne Slot’s side remain light in the position.

Guehi’s uncertain future

Guehi is now back at Palace with just 12 months left on his contract. The club face a dilemma: cash in during the January transfer window—albeit at a reduced fee—or risk losing him for free next summer.

From January, Guehi will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs. While Palace could still push for him to sign an extension, the England international has so far shown little interest in committing his future to Selhurst Park.
