Aston Villa have signed former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof on a two-year deal, and finalized loan deals for Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho.

Sweden captain Lindelof, 31, arrived on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester United expired in June.

Sancho, 25, has completed his loan move to Villa after turning down Roma earlier in the window, with Juventus also showing interest, Villa will cover 80% of his wages, with bonuses expected to make up the rest.

The winger has spent the past 18 months on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea but neither club made his move permanent.

Elliott, 22, has also completed his medical and signed a loan deal with Villa from Liverpool that includes an obligation to buy for £35m.

The midfielder, who made just one Premier League appearance this season, has been seeking regular football after slipping down the pecking order at Anfield.

Villa’s need for reinforcements

Villa’s 3-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday — their first Premier League loss at Villa Park in 12 months — exposed weaknesses in Unai Emery’s squad, the club have failed to score in their opening three league matches and sit on just one point.

Financial restrictions under profit and sustainability rules delayed business, but Villa’s late-window signings provide both experience and creativity.

Elliott arrives with an impressive résumé: Premier League, EFL Cup (2), UEFA Super Cup and two Under-21 European Championship titles, including a player of the tournament award in Slovakia this summer.

Sancho, meanwhile, faces another career crossroads after a turbulent spell at United. Despite showing flashes of his talent on loan at Dortmund — helping them reach the 2024 UEFA Champions League final — his fractured relationship with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and inconsistent form left him on the fringes at Old Trafford.

Sancho’s uncertain United future

United hold an option to extend Sancho’s deal to 2027, but his exit appears inevitable after just 83 appearances since arriving from Dortmund in 2021.

He played only once for United after August 2023, falling out with Ten Hag and spending months training alone before returning to Germany.

Chelsea offered a brief reprieve last season, but Sancho failed to establish himself there either. Villa now represent a potential fresh start — and Emery will hope to spark a revival similar to the one he oversaw with Marcus Rashford.
