The sentence comes after months of investigation and a high-profile trial that attracted international attention.

IREPORT247NEWS reported that Ekpa appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday, May 30, 2025, marking the official commencement of his trial for terrorism-related offenses.

The proceedings represent a significant action by Finnish authorities against terror-linked activities allegedly orchestrated from within Finland but with far-reaching consequences in Nigeria’s South-east region.

Ekpa, who holds dual citizenship in Finland and Nigeria, was initially arrested in November 2024 on suspicion of terrorism-related crimes.

The charges leveled against him include participation in a terrorist organization, incitement to violence, financing of terrorism, and engaging in activities deemed to undermine public safety and societal order.

According to Finnish authorities, Ekpa’s actions were closely tied to the ongoing separatist movement in Nigeria’s South-east region.

He is accused of leveraging social media platforms to spread inflammatory messages, incite violence, and fuel unrest in furtherance of his campaign for Biafran independence.

Prosecutors assert that these actions meet the legal definition of terrorism under Finnish law.

“We have gathered extensive evidence regarding this individual’s online activity, communications, and financial transactions,” stated state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala.

“His rhetoric and support have contributed to destabilization efforts abroad, which makes his actions a serious threat to both national and international security.”

Throughout the trial, Finnish authorities presented a range of digital evidence, including social media posts, videos, and financial records, aiming to demonstrate Ekpa’s central role in encouraging violent acts.

Prosecutors argued that his influence extended beyond online posts, claiming that he actively coordinated with supporters and facilitated activities designed to disrupt public order in Nigeria.

The Päijät-Häme District Court ruled on Monday that Ekpa had participated in a terrorist organization and publicly incited crimes for terrorist purposes.

Finnish newspaper Yle reported that the court emphasized the severity of his actions, noting that even activities conducted abroad could have serious consequences under Finland’s counter-terrorism laws.
