Newcastle United have signed forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford in a £55m deal, completed before the transfer window closed.

The Magpies had multiple bids rejected earlier in the summer before finally reaching an agreement.

Wissa had even taken to Instagram in recent days to express his frustration at Brentford blocking a move, insisting the club had gone back on a promise to let him leave if a fair offer arrived.

Wissa will wear the No.9 shirt and lead the forward line at St James’ Park, following Alexander Isak’s British-record £125m switch to Liverpool on Deadline Day.

Newcastle had maintained Isak would only be sold if suitable replacements were secured, and with Nick Woltemade arriving in a club-record deal from Stuttgart, Wissa becomes their second forward addition.

Player and manager reaction

Speaking to the club’s website, Wissa said:

“I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”

Eddie Howe added:

“Yoane is a player we have admired for some time. He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring but also the crucial work he does for the team. He has pace, power, an excellent work rate and will excite our supporters. He immediately makes us stronger.”

The statement that forced the move

In a lengthy Instagram post just 48 hours before Deadline Day, Wissa criticised Brentford for reneging on what he described as a written promise to allow him to leave if a fair offer was received.

Yoane Wissa boasted the second best non-penalty expected goals last season

“I have always given 100 per cent for Brentford since the day I signed in 2021,” he wrote. “But as the window comes to an end, the club has significantly changed its position, going against what was communicated. This has left me in a difficult and frustrating position.”

Wissa, who scored 49 goals in 149 appearances for the Bees, stressed he wanted to leave on good terms but urged Brentford to “honour their promise” in the final hours of the window.

The club declined to comment publicly on his statement.

The bigger picture

Wissa’s arrival softens the blow of losing Isak and gives Newcastle added firepower as they look to compete domestically and in Europe. Alongside Woltemade, he forms part of a reshaped Magpies attack heading into the new campaign.
