Manchester United have reached an agreement with Royal Antwerp to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens in a deal worth around £18.2 million.

The 23-year-old is travelling to Manchester to complete a medical and finalise a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

United had explored other options, including Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, but after weeks of deliberation and negotiations, the club decided Lammens was the right choice for their long-term plans.

If confirmed, Lammens will become the fifth signing of the summer under head coach Ruben Amorim, following Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon, taking the club’s spending to £232 million.

United’s Goalkeeping Situation

Lammens will join a crowded department that currently includes Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton.

While United are expected to retain all four for now, the transfer windows in Turkey (until 11 September) and Saudi Arabia (until 10 September) remain open, and suitable offers for their existing keepers may still be entertained.

Amorim had previously backed his goalkeeping group, despite early-season errors from Onana and Bayindir, but with pressure mounting, United have now moved decisively to secure fresh competition.

Who is Senne Lammens?

Signed from Club Brugge two years ago, Lammens has established himself as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Belgium.

He made 30 appearances for Antwerp last season, keeping seven clean sheets, and any sale would represent almost 100% profit for the Belgian champions.

Football expert Kevin Hatchard told Sky Sports News:

“He’s very calm. The mentality is good, and goalkeeping coaches in Belgium have long seen him as a rising star. His shot-stopping numbers are excellent, but it’s a huge leap to become No.1 at Manchester United. Interestingly, Ruben Amorim’s Sporting side were monitoring him before, so the admiration has been there for some time.”

Neville: United Need a Keeper

Former United captain Gary Neville has been outspoken on the club’s goalkeeping struggles:

“If your goalkeeper is making mistakes, it undermines everything. At Old Trafford, it’s the most unforgiving ground for goalkeepers. The two they’ve got right now don’t look authoritative. United have to get a goalkeeper in – I’ve thought it for months, and every United fan thinks the same.”

With Lammens now set to arrive, United will be hoping their latest addition can help stabilise one of the most scrutinised positions in English football.
