Liverpool have agreed a British-record transfer to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125m, with the Swedish striker set to complete his move to Anfield on Deadline Day.

The fee eclipses the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moisés Caicedo in 2023 and ends a month-long saga in which Isak pushed hard for a move.

According to transfer experts David Ornstein, the deal for the 25 years old striker is worth £130m to Newcastle with solidarity, but £125m cost to Liverpool and medical has been scheduled for today (Monday) September 1st before the summer transfer window closes by 7pm.

After completing his medical tests, the Sweden international is expected to sign a six-year contract before the club’s official announcement.

Liverpool had a £110m bid rejected earlier in August, with Newcastle holding out for £150m. But their stance softened after Isak refused to train or play in recent weeks in order to force through the transfer.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for a then-club-record £63m and scored 35 league goals across two seasons at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s striker rebuild

Isak’s exit leaves Newcastle scrambling for reinforcements up front, the club have already secured Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart in a deal worth up to £69m, but are still pursuing another forward to replace Callum Wilson, who departed on a free this summer.

Multiple bids have been rejected for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jørgen Strand Larsen, and the Magpies are now under severe pressure to get a deal done before tonight’s 7pm deadline.

Wissa forces the issue

The Wissa situation took a dramatic twist on Deadline Day eve, with the 27-year-old forward issuing a public statement demanding Brentford honour what he claims was a written promise to let him leave if a “fair offer” was received.

In an Instagram post, Wissa expressed his frustration, insisting he had been transparent with the club and that his desire to join Newcastle was being unfairly blocked.

“I want to make it clear that I have not acted unprofessionally, nor do I wish to leave Brentford on bad terms,” he wrote.

“But being made to stay beyond this summer will only tarnish four wonderful years at this incredible club. I ask Brentford’s owners and directors to now honour their promise to let me leave in the final hours of the window.”

Brentford have declined to comment on Wissa’s statement, while multiple reports say they have not seen evidence of the assurances he refers to.

What happens next?

With Isak heading to Liverpool and Newcastle still short of firepower, all eyes will be on how aggressively the Magpies move in the final hours of the window.

If they fail to land Wissa or an alternative, Eddie Howe could be left facing the season with just Woltemade as his frontline striker option.

For Liverpool, meanwhile, the record-breaking deal for Isak signals the biggest attacking investment since Darwin Núñez in 2022 — and potentially the decisive addition in their push to defend the Premier League title.
