Niger Police arrest two suspected hired assassins in Beji with pistol and cash after confessing they were paid to kill a man over ex-wife dispute

The Niger State Police Command has thwarted an alleged assassination attempt following the arrest of two men who were reportedly contracted to kill a victim in Bosso Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, identified as Muhammad Mohammed, aged 40, and Mohammed Usman, aged 35, were apprehended on Saturday, August 23, 2025, around 12:45 a.m. by a joint patrol team of police operatives and local vigilantes stationed at the railway crossing in Beji, Maikunkele axis.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP), Wasiu Abiodun, the suspects were subjected to a search during which officers discovered a locally fabricated pistol, a live cartridge, and the sum of ₦13,000 in their possession. These items were immediately confiscated as evidence.

During interrogation, both men reportedly admitted that they were hired assassins engaged by one Dogo, a resident of Beji.

The duo confessed that Dogo contracted them to assassinate a man whom he held a bitter grudge against for marrying his former wife.

Investigations further revealed that the suspects had agreed to carry out the killing for a negotiated fee of ₦100,000.

While Dogo had already advanced them ₦13,000 as transport fare, they were intercepted on their way to collect the full balance of the payment before executing the deadly task.

The suspects were initially detained at the Maikunkele Police Division for preliminary investigation.

They have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further questioning and prosecution.

SP Abiodun emphasized that the police are not treating the matter lightly given the seriousness of the allegations.

He further assured the public that efforts have been intensified to arrest the said Dogo, who remains at large and is believed to be the mastermind behind the assassination plot.

The incident has sparked tension within Beji community, with many residents expressing shock that such a plot could be hatched over a domestic and marital dispute.

Community leaders have commended the timely intervention of the patrol team, stressing that the swift action averted what could have been a tragic murder case.

While assuring residents of continuous protection, the Police Command urged communities across Niger State to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious movements or individuals to security operatives in order to forestall crimes of this nature.
