Marc Guehi put transfer talk to one side to captain Crystal Palace to a commanding 3-0 victory at Aston Villa, scoring a stunning goal that may yet prove his farewell gift to the club.

With Liverpool’s £35m bid for the England international lodged on Saturday, Guehi delivered a performance that underlined why he is so highly sought after, curling a magnificent second-half strike into the top corner before collapsing to the turf in front of the travelling Palace fans.

It was the highlight of a night that brought Palace their first win of the campaign and ended Villa’s remarkable 19-game unbeaten Premier League run.

Villa in disarray as Palace strike

Unai Emery’s side, still searching for their first league goal of the season, were already reeling from the absence of goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who has been linked with a Deadline Day move to Manchester United.

Replacement Marco Bizot endured a torrid night, conceding a penalty after bringing down Daichi Kamada, with Jean-Philippe Mateta converting from the spot.

Villa rallied after the break, especially once Emi Buendia entered the fray, but just as they threatened to find a foothold, Guehi struck from distance.

Ismaila Sarr’s brave back-post header soon killed off the contest, capping a dream week for Palace following their qualification for the Conference League league phase.

The only blemish for Palace was an injury to Adam Wharton, casting doubt over his England involvement during the international break.

Guehi’s legacy at Palace

Whether this was his last outing remains to be seen, but Guehi’s time at Selhurst Park is already tightly bound to a golden era for the club.

Since arriving from Chelsea, he has captained Palace from the age of 21, lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield, and now helped lead them into Europe for the first time in their history.

His leadership was evident again at Villa Park: assured in possession, dominant in duels, and marshalling a defence that never looked likely to crack. “I hope he stays with us,” said goalscorer Mateta afterwards, summing up the mood of a squad that clearly holds their skipper in the highest regard.

Emery: “We have started badly”

Villa boss Emery admitted frustration afterwards:

“Frustrated but we played first half well. We followed the game plan we were expecting and were dominating the match. We made one mistake, the penalty. We are sad for our supporters but we have to accept it and be together. We have started badly but tomorrow is the first of September, the finishing of the window.”

On Martinez’s future, Emery remained cagey:

“One of the circumstances is Emi Martinez. We will see tomorrow and then we try to get the balance and work after the break.”

Villa need solutions fast; for Palace, the only question is whether they will need to find a new captain before the window closes.
