Governors from the six states of Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone have renewed their collective commitment to addressing the region’s most pressing issues, including security, economic development, and climate change. The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF), consisting of governors from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States, made the pledge on Saturday, shortly after their 12th meeting in Jalingo.

In a communique issued after the meeting, they commended the progress made in combating insurgency in the region, particularly the gains achieved in recent years in countering Boko Haram. However, they expressed deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian crises and infrastructural deficits that continue to affect displaced populations and hinder recovery efforts in the North-East.

The governors highlighted the increasing threat posed by climate change, particularly the risk of flooding in the region. “Citing reports from credible agencies forecasting significant climate impacts, the Governors called for immediate, proactive measures to address the potential flooding risks,” the communique stated. They urged the Federal Government and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to prioritize the rebuilding of vital infrastructure, such as bridges, that have been damaged by flooding.

The rising cost of agricultural inputs emerged as another critical issue discussed by the Forum. The governors warned that unless addressed, the escalating costs could severely affect food production in the coming year, potentially leading to a food crisis in the region. “The Forum announced plans to host the North-East Trade Fair in Maiduguri, Borno State, in December 2025,” to promote regional trade and highlight the economic potential of the North-East.

The governors also reiterated their commitment to exploring solar power as a sustainable, cost-effective energy solution. They announced plans to develop an integrated subregional power master plan, to be spearheaded by the Committee on Power and Energy.

The communique emphasized that the challenges facing the North-East require continued unity and collaboration among the region’s six states. The governors reiterated their commitment to working together to improve the socio-economic conditions of the subregion.

The North-East region continues to face significant challenges, including a lack of adequate infrastructure and widespread displacement due to years of insurgency. However, the governors’ commitment to regional development and cooperation offers hope for a brighter future.

The planned North-East Trade Fair and the development of an integrated power master plan are steps in the right direction towards promoting economic growth and stability in the region.
