Fernandes’ last-gap penalty rescues Manchester United against Burnley

Bruno Fernandes converted a 97th-minute penalty to hand Manchester United a desperately needed 3-2 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford, in a match manager Ruben Amorim had labelled a “must-win.”

United’s head coach was under pressure following a humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby in midweek, but despite collecting three points, his side again displayed the same defensive frailties and lack of control that have plagued his tenure.

United twice went in front only to be pegged back, before Fernandes held his nerve deep into stoppage time after VAR spotted a shirt pull on Amad Diallo inside the box.

A fast start had seen United go ahead through a Josh Cullen own goal, but Burnley grew into the game, especially after Matheus Cunha limped off injured.

Lyle Foster equalised with a fine header from Jacob Bruun Larsen’s delivery, only for Bryan Mbeumo—who missed a crucial penalty in the midweek shootout defeat—to restore United’s lead just seconds after the restart with his first league goal for the club.

The hosts remained fragile, however, and Jaidon Anthony punished slack defending from a throw-in to level again.

Burnley looked set to claim a point until Fernandes redeemed himself after his miss against Fulham last weekend, dispatching the decisive spot-kick with virtually the final kick.

Amorim admitted he couldn’t bear to watch the penalty, but praised his captain’s composure.

“I don’t like to see penalties, but I was confident,” he told Sky Sports. “I wasn’t expecting Bruno to miss two in a row. We should have solved the game in the first half, but the effort was there and in the end it’s fair we won.”

The result eases some of the pressure on Amorim and gives United their first league victory of the season heading into the international break.
