Ruben Amorim praised his Manchester United players for their “effort” after Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time penalty sealed a dramatic 3-2 win over Burnley in what he had labelled a “must-win” game.

United twice went ahead only to be pegged back, before Fernandes converted in the 97th minute after VAR penalised a shirt pull on Amad Diallo.

Amorim’s side created 26 shots and 3.54 expected goals, yet still looked fragile at times.

The victory eased some of the pressure on the Portuguese coach following their midweek Carabao Cup humiliation against Grimsby, after which he admitted he “sometimes wants to quit – and sometimes wants to stay for the next 20 years.”

Speaking afterwards, Amorim said:

“When they put the effort in, I will always love them. Even when Amad misses chances, I love him if he gives everything. We need to understand we must always be at this level of effort. The performance is not always perfect, but the focus and commitment were there.”

Injury Setback for Mount and Cunha

United’s win was overshadowed by fresh injury concerns; Matheus Cunha left the pitch clutching his hamstring midway through the first half, while Mason Mount did not return after the break.

“We need them really bad to be competitive,” Amorim admitted. “We will check them.”

Goalkeeper Scrutiny Continues

Amorim also defended Altay Bayindir after the goalkeeper’s mistake gifted Jaidon Anthony Burnley’s second equaliser.

Andre Onana was similarly criticised after errors against Grimsby, but Amorim insisted United’s issues go beyond the goalkeeper position.

“It’s hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment. At this club everything is news. These things are not only about the goalkeeper. Players are struggling with the noise, but everybody has to improve.”

On Fernandes’ Penalty

The manager revealed he had “no doubt” Fernandes would score despite missing from the spot against Fulham last weekend.

“I don’t like to watch penalties, but I was confident. One moment can change a lot, and it was fair we won this game.”

Sesko’s Limited Role Explained

Amorim clarified why summer signing Benjamin Sesko started in midweek but was benched against Burnley.

The striker had completed his first 90 minutes of the season against Grimsby and finished with cramp, which limited his involvement.

Future Talks Loom

With the international break approaching, questions about Amorim’s long-term future resurfaced, the manager acknowledged ongoing discussions with the board but downplayed speculation.

“I’m always talking with the board. Today was a good day, but it was just one win. We should have won in a different way, without suffering. There is still a lot to improve.”

United head into the break with their first Premier League victory of the season, but Amorim’s position remains under scrutiny as the club continues to search for consistency.
