Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing the signing of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig in a deal worth just over £51m, beating Premier League rivals Chelsea to the Dutch midfielder’s signature.

The 22-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Spurs and is understood to have completed his medical ahead of a move to North London.

The contract is expected to run for an initial five years, with the option of a further two seasons, potentially keeping him at the club until 2032.

Spurs beat Chelsea to La Masia graduate

Chelsea had also been interested in Simons – who came through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig – but Spurs have moved decisively to wrap up the deal.

Simons was excused from Leipzig training on Thursday and travelled to London, according to transfer expert David Ornstein.

He enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Bundesliga last season, playing predominantly as a No. 8 on the left side of midfield but also impressing further forward and from wide positions.

Spurs’ transfer priorities

Tottenham have made signing a creative No. 10 a top priority this summer. The club previously missed out on Eberechi Eze, who joined Arsenal, and Morgan Gibbs-White, who signed a new Nottingham Forest contract.

While Simons fills a key gap, Spurs remain active in the market. They are also targeting a left winger – with Manchester City’s Savinho admired but unlikely to be sold – and a left-footed centre-back before the transfer window closes.

West Ham’s Lucas Paquetá and Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers are also liked by Spurs, but both are considered untouchable by their clubs.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapié has admirers in North London, but Spurs are not expected to challenge Arsenal for his signature.

A statement signing

The arrival of Simons, who starred for the Netherlands at youth level and impressed at the recent U21 Euros, would represent a major coup for manager Ange Postecoglou.

It also underscores Tottenham’s intent to build around a dynamic young core as they look to return to the Champions League.
