Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Dutch international Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £51 million, beating Chelsea and Bayern Munich to his signature.

The 22-year-old midfielder had been a long-term target for Chelsea, but Spurs moved decisively to wrap up a deal after the Blues prioritised their pursuit of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho in a £40m move.

Chelsea had valued Simons between £43.3m (€50m) and £47.6m (€55m), but chose not to match Leipzig’s asking price.

Simons’ arrival ends Tottenham’s search for a new No 10 after a frustrating summer in which they failed to land Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White and saw north London rivals Arsenal hijack their move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

For Spurs boss Thomas Frank, the signing comes as a major boost following James Maddison’s serious knee injury earlier this month, which is expected to keep the England international sidelined for most of the season.

Simons, who will wear the No 7 shirt, scored 22 goals in 78 appearances during two seasons at Leipzig, following earlier spells at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and PSV Eindhoven.

Simons: Frank convinced me

Speaking to Spurs’ official website, Simons revealed that talks with Frank were decisive in his decision.

“I’m really happy and can’t wait to get going. I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time. When I met the head coach, I knew straight away that this was the right place for me.

“I will bring flair to the team, but also hard work and discipline. I want to do everything I can to win, for the team and for the fans.”

Frank: “A great addition”

Frank hailed the signing, calling Simons a perfect fit for Spurs’ style of play.

“I’m really pleased we have brought Xavi in – he is a great addition to the squad. He has proven his ability to get goals and assists, both from the No 10 position and the left wing.

“He already has good experience at the top level and I know he will come in and be part of a good team that is already working hard together.”

Simons becomes Tottenham’s seventh summer signing, taking their spending past £170m as they look to bounce back from last season’s disappointment and push for a top-four finish.
