Jose Mourinho has left his role as Fenerbahce head coach just over a year after his appointment, the Turkish club have confirmed.

The decision comes two days after a 1-0 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League play-offs, which ended Fenerbahce’s hopes of reaching the group stage.

In an official statement, the Istanbul club said:

“Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”

Mixed spell in Turkey

Mourinho, 62, was appointed in June 2024 and guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish behind rivals Galatasaray in the Süper Lig last season, however his tenure was often marked by controversy.

In February, Galatasaray accused him of making racist remarks after a fiery Istanbul derby and vowed to pursue criminal proceedings – allegations Mourinho strongly denied, countering with a lawsuit seeking damages.

He also received a two-match touchline ban (reduced from four) after criticising referees.

The Portuguese coach was also sent off in a Europa League match against Manchester United in October, later quipping that he wanted to manage “a team at the bottom of the table in England” so as to avoid UEFA competitions.

A glittering but turbulent career

One of the most decorated coaches of his generation, Mourinho has managed 10 clubs across Europe, including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham.

He has won the Champions League with both FC Porto and Inter Milan , three Premier League titles with Chelsea, and guided Manchester United to their last European trophy – the Europa League in 2017.

At Roma, he won the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022, delivering the club’s first-ever European silverware.

Mourinho’s exit from Fenerbahce comes just hours after fellow former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær was sacked by Besiktas following their elimination from the Conference League by Lausanne.
